“The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say concerning the Lord, who is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust … He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield… Because you have made the Lord—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place, no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent. For he will give his angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways. They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:1–12).
This “Dwelling” is a place.
David was rightly obsessed with Heaven, Jehovah’s Dwelling Place. “I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking him in his temple” (Psalm 27:4). “Lord, I love the house where you dwell, the place where your glory resides” (Psalm 26:8).
Israel’s great king was certain of God’s immediate and constant protection and convinced of his own eternal destiny. “The Lordis my shepherd… Even when I go through the darkest valley I fear no danger for you are with me … and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live” (Psalm 23:1–6).
In the New Testament, the aged Apostle John got a glimpse of every Christian’s eternal dwelling place. “I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away” (Revelation 21:3–4). The best part of Heaven won’t be the golden streets, but the compassionate, comforting presence of a personal God.
Our future co-habitation with God will be stunningly spectacular…. “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:1–3, NKJV).
This “Dwelling Place” is also a person… Jehovah-God … Jesus.
“Because you have made the Lord … your dwelling place” (Psalm 91:9), He promises to save you and sustain you. If you will, by faith, make Jehovah-God your “Dwelling Place”, then He will eternally extend to you His Omnipotent protections.
Jesus wants to be our Dwelling Place. He graciously invites us to change our address. He says, “Abide in me, and I in you… Abide in my love” (John 15:4, 9, ESV).
Where do I find peace and protection today? Where do I run when I am fearful, anxious, hurting or alone? I run to Jesus, “My Dwelling Place!”
