“HE IS NOT HERE … HE HAS RISEN”

Jesus had once looked with compassion on a crowd of people, saying, “they are like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36). That described the disciples immediately after Jesus’ crucifixion.

Jesus died on Friday. Saturday was the Sabbath Day, a day of rest. Apparently, the disciples gathered in the “guest room”(Luke 22:11) where they had shared the last Passover meal (John 20:10). “What should we do?” “Where should we go?” “He’s dead! What now?”

On Sunday morning, the faithful women left the “guest room” for the place where His body was entombed. They carried the “spices they had prepared” (Luke 24:1) for anointing the corpse of their beloved Rabbi.

On the way to the grave, they wondered who might roll the heavy stone away from the sepulcher (Mark 16:3). Much to their surprise, the stone had already been moved.

Peeking into the tomb, they saw that Jesus’ body was gone. Gone! “Suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes … ‘Why are you looking for the living among the dead? … He is not here, but he has risen!’ Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?” (Luke 24:5-7). “Remember?” “Now,” they said, “go, tell his disciples and Peter” (Mark 16:7).

Racing back to the guest room, the women reported their findings. “He is not dead! He has risen!”

“These words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away” (Luke 24:11-12). Peter and his pals “did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying” (John 20:9-10).

Not yet… but soon…

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
