Paul prayed for the Ephesian church, and by extension, for every Christian… Paul prayed for you and me. Listen in as the great Apostle turns his eyes heavenward…
“I pray that he may grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with power in your inner being through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, and to know Christ’s love that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:16–19).
In the opening sentence, Paul prayed that we would recognize the power that is available to us because of the indwelling presence of God’s Spirit. He then asked the Father to open our hearts and minds to “comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, and to know Christ’s love.”
How much does Jesus love us? “He laid down his life for us” (1 John 3:16), and there is absolutely NO “greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
Intellectually, factually, historically, we know that Jesus died on the cross. He did this for us. And still, Paul prayed that we might “comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, and to know Christ’s love.”
Meditate, ruminate, contemplate … How wide? How high? How deep? … is the love of Christ!
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
