God’s always-just judgement fell upon the evil Egyptian army when they chased Israel into the dry bed of the Red Sea. The immense walls of water that had been miraculously piled up “came back and covered the chariots and horsemen, plus the entire army of Pharaoh that had gone after them into the sea. Not even one of them survived… That day the Lord saved Israel from the power of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore” (Exodus 14:28–30).
In the New Testament, Satan induced Ananias to lie to the Holy Spirit. As a result of God’s judgment, “Ananias dropped dead, and a great fear came on all who heard. The young men got up, wrapped his body, carried him out, and buried him” (Acts 5:5–6). Hours later, Sapphira also lied. “Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in, they found her dead, carried her out, and buried her beside her husband” (Acts 5:10).
God’s judgment was poured out upon wretched Sodom and Gomorrah after Lot was escorted to safety. “Out of the sky the Lordrained on Sodom and Gomorrah burning sulfur from the Lord. He demolished these cities, the entire plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and whatever grew on the ground” (Genesis 19:24–25).
In the most epic judgment of human history, when “the Lord saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time” (Genesis 6:5), God devastated the earth with water. “Every creature perished—those that crawl on the earth, birds, livestock, wildlife, and those that swarm on the earth, as well as all mankind. Everything with the breath of the spirit of life in its nostrils—everything on dry land died. He wiped out every living thing that was on the face of the earth, from mankind to livestock, to creatures that crawl, to the birds of the sky, and they were wiped off the earth” (Genesis 7:21–23).
The Biblical evidence of God’s judgment leads me to wonder… might God be preparing to send judgment on America? Are Divine storms looming over the USA, where sin is flaunted before a Holy God. Innocent women and children are bought and sold like livestock, mass murder is a too-common occurrence, boys become girls and girls become boys, highly-addictive illegal drugs are peddled on street corners, and civil debate in our statehouses has been replaced by divisive and disrespectful sniping and even vehement hatred. America the beautiful? One nation under God?
But there is good news! “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8, NKJV). “By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family” (Hebrews 11:7). When God’s devastating judgment was poured out upon creation, “Noah was left, and those that were with him in the ark” (Genesis 7:23). God sheltered, secured, and saved Noah … by grace!
Living under Rome’s tyrannical rule, Peter was confident of God’s grace. “If he didn’t spare the ancient world, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness… and if he rescued righteous Lot … then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials”(2 Peter 2:5–9). We don’t need to build an ark for safety. Refuge is found in Jesus! “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
“Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:9). When the storms of life are raining on you, hand-in-hand with Jesus, walk on…
