We’re reading Genesis, the Book of Beginnings, looking for glimpses and glimmers of Jesus and His Gospel of Grace. As we have seen, and will continue to discover, the Omniscient One inspired the writing of Scripture to include many New Testament truths embedded in the Old Testament narrative. Our quest is to unearth these nuggets of precious treasure and truth.
This little nugget isn’t hard to find, for He came walking in the garden, seeking His unfaithful creatures. “The man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze… The Lord God called out to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ ”(Genesis 3:8-9).
He didn’t need to ask, “Where are you?” He knew. The Psalmist sings of this truth. “Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? … If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, even there…”(Psalm 139:7–10). You can’t hide from the All-Knowing, Ever-Present One! (It’s no fun playing hide-and-seek with God.)
God knew where Adam and Eve were hiding, He knew why they were hiding and the sin they had committed. He always knows. But still, He came seeking. He is the Seeker!
On His final journey to Jerusalem, Jesus had a divine appointment with the least-worthy, most-hated, chief tax collector, Zacchaeus. “The Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost”(Luke 19:10).
The Seeker is illustrated in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. While his wayward son was wasting his wealth on riotous living, the Father was constantly scanning the distant horizon, searching for a glimpse of His beloved son (Luke 15:18-21). It didn’t matter that the son had rebelled against his Father. It didn’t matter, because God’s grace outweighs man’s guilt… “God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”(Romans 5:8).
“Behold, I (the Seeker) stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me”(Revelation 3:20, ESV).
“… think on these things”(Philippians 4:8, KJV). |
