THE UNBURNING BUSH

The eighty-year-old runaway murderer “was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro... He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God” (Exodus 3:1).

Shepherds traveled great distances, crisscrossing the desert to find pasture. After forty years, Moses had walked every path in the Sinai Peninsula. On this day, he found himself at Mount Horeb, also called Mount Sinai.

In his long journeys, he’d seen everything. He’d even seen lightning strike the dry desert brush. When fire fell from Heaven, the thirsty shrubbery burst into flame and was turned to ash in a flash! Poof!

On this day, he witnessed something he’d never seen. No one had ever reported a bush burning without being consumed by the blaze. No one! But there it was. A desert bush was on fire, burning like a blowtorch, but it continued to blaze, not being consumed by the fire.

“As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed. So Moses thought, ‘I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why isn’t the bush burning up?’ ” (Exodus 3:2-3). Of course he did. “I’ve got to get a closer look!”

You know the story.

God spoke from the blazing bush, commanding Moses to return to Egypt to free the Hebrew slaves. But before we get to that, let’s look closely at that bush… Moses saw the uniqueness of that bush. He couldn’t miss it!

Why? God was in the bush! That’s what made it so different. There were lots of dry old shrubs, but only one was visibly filled with God’s presence. From the bush, God offered His invitation to a miraculous and marvelous event. “Hey Moses. Go tell your relatives that I’ve come to set them free!”

Here’s the take-away. If you are a Christian, you are unique. You look and act differently than others. Why? Because you are filled with God’s presence! God put His fire in you, not to consume you, but to make you light in the darkness.

You have a story to tell!

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
